Introduction

Hello Everyone! I am Noni Septika Sihombing, an energetic UI/UX Enthusiast with experience in product development. Passionate to explore and research product knowledge and needs from the user then make it to be solutive design. I attend UI/UX Bootcamp at Skilvul which collaborates with DTS KOMINFO Indonesia and Bank Jago. I am not employed or bound by a professional contract with Bank Jago.

Overview

As we can see, life insurance products are sold as prevention from disasters or bad things that will happen in the future. This is quite serious considering that not everyone has planned for the future. One possibility why people don’t do it is because they want to be more optimistic and less negative (because the future gets scary). So, we need to create a fun platform that makes users attracted to plan and allocate their funds by educating them first!

Role: UI/UX Designer
Output: Affinity Diagram, User Persona, Crazy-8’s, User Flow, Wireframe, Mockup, Prototype, and Redesign after Usability Testing
Duration: 1,5 Month

Design Process

To make the solutive design, I apply the Design Thinking method with five-stage. The five stages of Design Thinking are as follows: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test.

Design Thinking Method

Design thinking is a human-centered approach to innovation that draws from the designer’s toolkit to integrate the needs of people, the possibilities of technology, and the requirements for business success — Tim Brown (IDEO)

🔍 Empathize

Empathize is to assist the designer in finding out the views & the needs of the target user with research before defining the problem statement and doing ideation. As UI/UX Designer, we need to balance business and user needs. Firstly, we did Desk Research and break down Bank Jago’s Brief to collect business needs. After that, we can be moving forward to collect user needs.

To collect user needs, we did Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with our internal team. Then, we get three types of users, they are (1) users who already know the life insurance system, but they want to add the reallocation of the sum insured, (2) users who have never participated in insurance, but they often hear negative stigma about insurance, and (3) users who are not aware and never looked for information about life insurance.

Besides, I did an In-Depth Interview with one person exclude our team to sharpen the opportunity. From this stage, we identify the user and write it into User Persona. User Persona is a fictional character created in representing a user type that might use Life Insurance.

🧐 Define

Defining user problems and needs from the results of Empathize Stage. To make easily finding, we organize Empathize’s results into Affinity Map.

Then, we did How Might We (HMW) to decide the goal for this product

How might we help users to educate about Life Insurance until they plan and allocate fund clearly?

💡 Ideate

Start brainstorming ideas and solutions based on Pain Points, How Might We, and User Persona. To make easily finding, we brainstorm solution ideas on Affinity Map.

Solution Idea of Last Wish Needs and Problem

Then, we need the Prioritization Idea Matrix to choose solution ideas that must do it now.

Next, we can draw solutions simply with Crazy-8’s.

After we get ideas and solutions clearly, we create specifically visual solutive to three below:

1 — User Flow is the user’s steps to complete each task on the app.

2 — Wireframe presents the structure and layout of the final design on the black-white sketch.

3— Mockup presents perfection of Wireframe and it applies Information Architecture

This is the Design System of this Interface. A design system is a complete set of standards intended to manage design at scale using reusable components and patterns.

🖱️ Prototype

After the empathize, define, and ideate stages, we create a Figma prototype. The prototype is linking one design to others to make users can get experience to try the App before developing with Engineer Code. To try the prototype of Last Wish, you can click it below: (for a better experience, click “Options” and choose “Fit”)

📝Test

After designing the Last Wish features, I did Usability Testing to check the validity both of the design and user perception. I ask the user to do 4 tasks, they are: (1)Take Life Insurance Quiz, (2)Buy Product with Recommendation by Bank Jago, (3)Buy Product with Self-Observing, and (4)Allocate their fund into testament. From this stage, I get some feedback and I apply them to redesign my interface.

Conclusion

Life Insurance is an important part of our life but this is not realized in the public. Most of them think this is a terrible thing and need not think about it.

So through this project, I hope to break all of the bad assumptions with the features I offer. Because the tagline is Educate, Plan, and Allocate Fund with Fun!

To achieve this, I apply the Design Thinking method to produce each output at each stage. After going through the Design Thinking process to get a solution design, I iterated with Usability Testing. The results of this iteration will redesign some views. Even though this project has a timeline, I can still do the next iteration because user and business needs are never-ending stories.

Recommendation

Bank Jago can provide visual tutorials on their product to users such as videos, images, articles, etc. Because the main user problem and need is miss understanding of information. Besides, it’s important things to clarify all of the requirements to the user before they start to cross your app
